Rumor Mill: LG Nexus 5 to be released in the Philippines

Rumor has it that LG Nexus 5 will be released in the Philippines next week! The phone will be sold through a major carrier, and other "legit" gadget shops.

If this is indeed true, I will assume that the major carrier is Smart since they released the LG Nexus 4 last year. It is also safe to say that it will be free under LTE data plan 1500 as the Nexus 4 is free at Data Plan 1500.

For the unlocked LG Nexus 5, I guess the price range will be from P18,000 to P23,000 which is clearly far from the original retail price of the phone in the US.

I just hope the 32GB version of LG Nexus 5 will be free on LTE Data Plan 1500, or will be largely be at stores as this phone does not have an microSD expansion slot.

Samsung Galaxy Note II LTE (GT-N7105) receives official Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update

Similar to its brother (Samsung Galaxy Note II N7100), Samsung has just started rolling out Android 4.3 update for the Galaxy Note II LTE (GT-N7105). It’s been a long time since Samsung updated the Galaxy Note II to a new version of Android. Jellybean 4.1.1 is the stock OS installed out of the box, so 4.3 update is indeed a welcome change to all users.

CHANGES AND IMPROVEMENTS IN ANDROID 4.3 UPDATE
- GALAXY GEAR Support
- TRIM Support (Makes the device much faster)
- Samsung KNOX
- Samsung Wallet (Pre-loaded)
- Better RAM management
- Core UI elements updated to the ones on the Galaxy S4 (Galaxy S4′s theme all over)
- New Samsung Keyboard
- GPU drivers have been updated (Higher GPU benchmark scores)
- New Lockscreen: Multiple Widgets, improved ripple effect than Android 4.1.2, ability to change clock size and set a personal message
- New screen modes (From S4): Adapt Display and Professional Photo
- Daydream
- Driving mode
- Actionable notifications
- Move-to-SD-card feature
- New Camera mode : Sound and Shot
- New Additions in Notification Centre
- Completely revamped Settings UI (Tabbed interface – Exactly like the Galaxy S4)
- Implementation of Voice controls (Let’s you control various parts of the phone using voice commands – Galaxy S4 feature)
- New Samsung Apps: Calculator, Clock, Contacts, Gallery, Music
- Full screen Samsung apps
- New S-Voice (from Galaxy S4)

The wait is over! Samsung has just started rolling out Android 4.3 update for the Galaxy Note II in India and, then China.

In case you dont know, Samsung Note II users like me have not received a major update as it is launched with Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean out of the box. The last update it received it the upgrade to 4.1.2. Samsung pulled out their plans to update it to 4.2.2 when they learned that 4.3 is a major upgrade.

Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time, out on Android!

Android fans rejoice as "Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's about time" is finally out at Google Play... but it is only downloadable if you are from Australia or New Zealand, so  fans from the Philippines will have to wait a little longer.
If you recall, this game is initally available in iOS. It took a few months before it gets ported to Android, but we're not complaining at least we do not have to wait for more than a year just like the first one.

Can't wait for it to be available in Google Play Philippines? Download it's APK and data file

BBM for Android and iOS now LIVE in the Philippines

UPDATE [9/22/2013]: Blackberry disabled the leaked BBM for Android app due to overwhelming traffic and says it caused an issue to their part. If you install the APK now and attempt to login or register, you will be redirected to the BBM webpage and there's no way to login. We'll update thei page once the offical APK becomes available in Google Play.

As most of you know, September 21 is the launch of BBM on Android worldwide, and a day after for iOS. However it turns out it's the other way around in the Philippines. iPhone users get to see and download BBM from the App store, while fake BBM apps continue to flood Google's Play Store, and the original BBM app is nowhere to be found.

As you see on the screenshot below, you can login using your existing Blackberry ID, however it will provide new a new PIN, just like when you upgrade to a newer Blackberry phone. I also need to point out that logging-in did not import my existing BBM contacts from my old Blackberry (which is weird and needs to work on to). Other than that, so far so good. It gives me the same feel of the same old BBM on the Blackberry. I am also able to invite and chat with BBM users on Android, iOS, and Blackberry platforms.

Anyway, to tease you more, here are photos of BBM on Android installed in my phone and friend's tablet. You can also add me on BBM. Enjoy the photos!

Can't wait for it to appear on Play store? Follow this link, download, and  install the APK. Enjoy!

Blackberry Philippines' Time to Swap & Switch Promo

Blackberry is getting aggressive in selling more Blackberry in the Philippines as they have added the newest phone in their line-up, The Blackberry Q5. In case you don't know, Q5 is the budget-friendly version of the Q10. However, I was informed that the Philippines will only get the 3G version, and not the LTE version of the phone. Not a good move eh, considering it's SRP is P18,990.

They also added the Q5 in their latest campaign  which is "Swap & Switch: wherein you trade-in your old/new phone phone for any Blackberry of your choice. I personally think the trade-in values are not that good, so just sell your phone online, and buy any Blackberry you want.

Anyway, if still you want to trade-in your old phones or gadgets your may use the Blackberry Swap & Switch calculator from their Facebook page, or you may look at the reference below for the trade-in values of your beloved or pre-loved phones:

Get these Unbelievable Deals from Globe - August 23 to 26, 2013

Who would have thought that a telco will remove it's cash out on the  Samsung Galaxy S4 after 4 months of its release in the Philippines.

Globe launched a great deal this long weekend, and temporarily removed the P4800 cash out when getting a Samsung Galaxy S4 on Plan 1799.

Other great deals include the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 LTE which is now free on Plan 1799, Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2, now free on Plan 999 which both are originally free on Plan 1799, and the budget-friendly phone Huawei Ascend G510 which is now free on Plan 299. All phones are at 24 months lock-up period.

The problem with this is, the deal is only available to NEW subscribers. Weekly offers like this do not apply to old subscriber who are already out of their lock-up periods.

I think, Globe needs to revisit their loyalty/retention policy to its subscribers as there are customers out there who are willing to stay with them despite the network issues they encounter everyday

Official Jellybean update now available for Optimus L5, L7, L9 and 4X in the Philippines

Courtesy of LG Philippines Blog:

The latest version in Android is now available in select models of the first-generation LG Optimus L Series smartphones!  For Optimus L5, L7, and L9, users may now upgrade their current Android to Jellybean OS.
The Jellybean version adapts the functional features of earlier updates of Android such as Gingerbread, Honeycomb, and Ice Cream Sandwich, but it also includes new developments to further beef up the dynamic and consumer-centric package of smartphones.
For one, audio feedback and gesture controls are enhanced for a more sensory and accessible user experience.  Smartphone screens are made more visually attractive with smoother and speedier graphic displays as well as improvements in web browser and file management.  Intuitive experiences are pushed even further with smarter keyboard predictions and the Jellybean’s advanced natural language voice command.  The most impressive inclusion of the Jellybean would be Google Now, which gives the user information relevant to the current situation, such as train schedules while one is on a subway platform, traffic or weather conditions while on the road, and many more.
To upgrade, customers may visit any authorized LG Mobile Service Center or download Jellybean through http://www.lg.com/ph/support.  Users of Optimus L9 may also choose the built-in Firmware Over-the-Air or Software Upgrade Option.
The Jellybean update is also now available in LG’s first Quadcore device, the Optimus 4X HD.
For more information on the products of LG Mobile, visit www.lg.com/ph or www.lgblog.com.ph or like LG Mobile’s official Facebook page—LG Optimus PH.

My Globe complaint regarding the latest billing system upgrade

Hello Globe,

I am very disappointed with your service recently. This is about your billing, after being delayed for three weeks, I finally received my Globe billing statement #26 which covers 16 Feb 2013 – 15 March 2013. To my surprise, I saw my data charges on “per-KB” basis, and worst of all, I am charged P45,390.26 for using my data which is supposed to be on a “special” time-based charging. I am grateful that you waived P43,158.12 of it because of the “No-Bill shock” feature, but I am sorry to say that I am still shocked to look at my bill as there are a lot of errors on my latest bill. I am blaming your “I.T. Billing upgrade” because it seems like it does not recognize how my legacy plan charges.

Now let’s enumerate the facts here first:
1.       Affected Mobile Number: 0917564****
2.       Plan prior March 19: MY FULLY LOADED PLAN 999 (Legacy Plan)
3.       Having billing issues with Bill Number: 26
4.       I have an unpaid balance of P1310.62 from Bill Number: 25

Let me enumerate the issues I have with my current bill:
1.       I did not request to change my data charging scheme from time-based to KB-based, so why am I being charged on per-KB basis?... and what is WAP charges? (See image below)

2.       I have Freebie F: 3-hour free mobile internet. You know what this means? If I consume this freebie, I will be charged P0.33 PER MINUTE and will not be on-top my bill because it will charged against my consumable. I have this freebie during this period, so why am I still being charged on per-KB basis? Please refer to ALL my previous bills, and you will be surprised that I am charged for data usage by the minute, and not per KB.

Bill No. 26

Bill No. 25

Now, you may be asking why I am sending an email instead of calling the hotline. Well, I already did. Three times actually, and it seems like all your representatives can’t understand English or Filipino because they can’t get the report right. You may refer to reference numbers:
1.       50202381 (4/20/2013) – Was not submitted by the first agent according to agent who created 50229581.
2.       50229581 (4/25/2013) – Disapproved. The agent just said on the report that I just wanted a bill adjustment, no details mentioned as above according to agent who created 50256847.
3.       50256847 (4/30/2013) – I don’t know if he took note of all the details I mentioned above.

You don’t know how stressed I am with this issue. I never had a billing issue with your company until this bill came along. I am also really disappointed because I have to repeat myself three times to report this issue without any resolution. Your customer service sucks when handling issues with bills. You better fix this because I am not responsible if there are issues with your “new” billing system, and I am not paying for something that is clearly isn’t my fault.

Jan Brane Tizon
